I don’t think we need to be NICU parents to realize every moment of our child’s life is worth celebrating. While we do have many milestones that most parents don’t think about after the first day or week, we also have the ones every parent celebrates, like weekly birthdays, which will turn to monthly, then yearly. So today, August is three weeks old! We have been celebrating and tracking these achievements with weekly photo sessions.
The teddy bear in the picture is just like the one Meg had when she was growing up. I mean exactly the same. Meg bought this one a few years ago when she saw it in a store because it was the same. She didn’t even think about it at the time that it may be the first teddy bear her child would have. Her’s may be a little more loved, but this one is already finding it’s place with Auggie.
Today, on Auggie’s three week birthday, he is having a pretty good day. He has been handling the less stressful ventilator pretty well. He did lose a little bit of weight last night, but that was expected considering what his body is going through. He is spending a few extra calories on his breathing, but it’s better than having to reintubate him. As long as he doesn’t continue to decrease, they are going to let him ride it out. Right now, his goals are to put on weight, tolerate feeds. and learn to breath on his own.
